Civil and Environmental Engineering is the study of planning, design, construction, and operation of the man-made environment, the economic and social engine of society, while protecting and restoring the natural environment. It also includes the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the foundations of modern society, including water, air, transportation, food and energy systems, ports and airports, roads and bridges, disaster and safety, and environmental protection and restoration. Civil and Environmental Engineering majors typically specialize in one of the technical areas listed above. Since the beginning of history, humans have developed and refined skills to improve their survival and quality of life through the use of resources and the environment. We educate students to deal with increasingly severe natural disasters and climate change, the needs of advanced industries such as biotechnology, and the challenges of the ICT-driven 21st century.
