The department was established in 1963 as the Department of History, College of Liberal Arts. It was renamed as the Department of History, College of Literature and Humanities in 1997 when the undergraduate division system was implemented. The department was then reorganized as the Department of History, College of Liberal Arts in 2009 when the division system was re-implemented. The department aims to train historians capable of leading the 21st century and to educate students with a sound historical perspective. The department consists of undergraduate and graduate programs (M.A. and Ph.D. programs - Korean History, Eastern History, and Western History) and the Graduate School of Education (History Education), and is led by highly qualified full-time professors and academic instructors.

Goals of the Department
The Department of History focuses on the study and teaching of Korean history to produce competent historians capable of discovering and systematizing the cultural heritage of the Korean people as well as to foster excellent history teachers and intellectuals to disseminate this knowledge. We also emphasize the study and teaching of Eastern history, Western history, and archaeology in order to equip students with the ability to recognize the distinctive position of Korean culture in the world.
