Established in 1959 as a department of KU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, we have contributed to national and community development throughout our half-century history based on our founding philosophy of integrity, fidelity, and righteousness. We operate differentiated and specialized educational programs to develop creative professionals who lead the global society. The department has graduated 32 Ph.D. students, 270 master's students, and more than 1,300 bachelor's students, playing a key role in the development of Korea's chemical-related industries.
The Department of Chemistry has 11 full professors and 4 honorary professors, with 130 undergraduate and 33 graduate students. Professors in Physical Chemistry (4), Organic Chemistry (3), Inorganic Chemistry (1), Analytical Chemistry (2), and Biochemistry (2) are nationally and internationally recognized for their outstanding basic and applied research in most major fields of chemistry. In addition, almost all of our graduate students are currently employed as research assistants and teaching assistants and have received numerous research grants from the National Science Foundation of Korea, the National Research Foundation of Korea, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government. In 1997, the Department of Chemistry and Liquid Crystals Research Center was designated as the principal research institute for the Next Generation Flat Panel Display Technology Development Project (G7 Project). Supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Science and Technology, it researches the development of high-speed LCDs, the key to the LCD industry in the 21st century. In addition, all of its researchers have been employed by leading domestic LCD companies and are playing key roles.

Educational Goals
We nurture chemists with great potential for leadership and creativity in preparation for the 21st century by focusing on understanding a wide range of molecular sciences. In addition, we cultivate scientists who will engage in research activities in academic institutions and laboratories and professionals who will contribute to the development of Korean industry in industrial laboratories. We also conduct world-class research activities to achieve our mission.
